Ventura County FC Suffers First Loss of the Season Against St. Louis FC 2

By: Colby Bangasser

Ventura County FC took their first loss of the season against St. Louis FC 2 on Sunday March 15 at William Rolland Stadium.
VCFC struck first in the 37th minute of play. Mason Vanney ran onto a ball played up the right flank, connecting with his striker Julian Placias. Placias played a clever backheel pass to Dylan Vanney who was running into the box. Vanney finished it in the bottom left corner to record his 3rd straight game with a goal this season.
HALFTIME SCORE: VCFC 1, STL 0
St. Louis equalized in the 51st minute of play. Forward Riley Lynch dribbled past the VCFC defense to chip in a cross. Midfielder Jerome Barclay was free in the box to smash it home.
VCFC bounced back just 10 minutes later thanks to Arnau Vilamitjana. After Vilimitjana won the ball in the midfield, he continued his run in behind the St. Louis defense. Dylan Vanney played a through ball to an open Vilitmijana. St. Louis goalkeeper Colin Welsh rushed out of his box, but Vilimitjana skipped past him for an open goal. This was Vilimitjana’s first goal of the season and first ever professional goal.
Unfortunately for VCFC, the goals for them stopped there and the goals for St. Louis didn’t. In the 64th minute of play, St. Louis Palmer Ault tucked home a rebound off a Sebastian Conlon save. Ault struck again in the 76th minute to give his side their first lead of the game. Riley Lynch crossed the ball into VCFC’s box, finding Ault for the late lead.
VCFC searched relentlessly for an equalizer, with the closest chance coming from Troy Elgersma. Elgersma danced through the St. Louis defense only to have his low shot saved by Welsh.
