Ventura County FC secured their 4th win of the season in a 2-0 victory over Sporting KC II at Swope Park on May 6.

VCFC were looking to turn their fortunes around following two consecutive defeats. Right away, the 805 side got to business. In the 7th minute, Eric Preston, who made his first start of the season, charged into Sporting’s final third. Preston set up Troy Elgersma, only for Elgersma to be denied by the post.

Preston again made himself dangerous in the 11th minute, with a left footed strike from inside the box. Sporting goalkeeper Jack Kortkamp denied Preston’s shot to keep it scoreless.

Sporting nearly took the lead in the 23rd minute. Sebastian Conlon stopped a shot from Sporting midfielder Shane Donovan. The ball managed to slip through Conlon just enough, but Jose Magaña Jr. was there to clear it off the line.

HALFTIME: VCFC 0 – SKC 0

Just as they did in the first half, VCFC got to work right away. Dylan Vanney opened up the scoring in the 47th minute with a rocket from outside the 18. Kortkamp got a hand to it, but it wasn’t enough to keep out Vanney’s shot. This is Vanney’s 6th goal of the season and marks a new career high for Vanney in MLS Next Pro goals in a single season.

Ruben Ramos Jr. doubled VCFC’s lead in the 61st minute with another smashing goal. Ramos collected the ball from just inside the 18. With his back to goal, Ramos turned and fired with his left foot, finding the top corner. This is Ramos’ 2nd goal of the season.

Efforts from Sporting were denied by Sebastian Conlon. Conlon recorded 5 saves in another clean sheet victory, making that 4 clean sheets on the season for the University of Kentucky alumni.
