Ventura County FC came from behind to take home 2 points in a 2-2 draw and a penalty shootout win against Austin FC II.

Austin struck first in the 19th minute of play after midfielder Djaka Barro picked off a VCFC pass. Barro played it to forward Ibrahima Sall who buried it for a 1-0 Austin lead. VCFC came close to an equalizer in the 33rd minute, with Arnau Vilamitjana hitting the crossbar from a corner.

Austin extended the lead to 2-0 before halftime. An Austin free kick fell to right back Riley Thomas in the 18, who hit it off the half volley into Ventura’s net.

HALFTIME SCORE: VCFC 0, Austin 2

VCFC got on the board late in the game. Dylan Vanney pulled one back in the 73rd minute with a brilliant free kick outside the box. This marks Vanney’s second straight game this season with a goal.

Just 3 minutes later, Troy Elgersma scored his first professional goal to equalize. Elgersma slotted it home from just inside the 18 after right back Mason Vanney crossed it in. This is Elgersma’s second goal involvement this season.

The goals stopped for the rest of the match, meaning a penalty shootout would decide who would take the extra point.

Goalkeeper Sebastian Conlon came up huge for VCFC, saving the first 2 Austin penalties. Gabriel Arnold and Julian Placias scored their penalties. Austin missed their last penalty, setting the stage for Dylan Vanney. Vanney scored his penalty to secure the 2 points and complete the comeback.
